Afgelopen woensdagavond zijn we na een prima vlucht aangekomen in Kampala. De echte Afrikaanse geuren kwamen ons tegemoet, het verkeer is nog niet verandert en het klimaat is nog altijd heerlijk, met temperaturen rond de 25 graden hebben we niets te klagen.
Toch is het een beetje een rare gewaarwording hier weer te zijn, aan de ene kant voelt het leeg om alles en iedereen in Nederland weer achter te laten, maar aan de andere kant is Uganda echt ons thuis.
We hebben zin om weer aan het werk te gaan. Toch hebben we het gevoel dat we na de drukke tijd in Nederland wel een vakantie kunnen gebruiken. We kijken terug op een vruchtbare tijd waarin we gelukkig voor Kaja en Bulamu veel werk hebben kunnen verzetten.
De afgelopen dagen hebben we uitgebreid met Joseph gesproken, plannen gemaakt voor de toekomst. Het was fijn om te merken dat hij blij is dat we er weer zijn. We gaan samen weer lekker aan de slag.
Zoals jullie misschien wel weten is er tijdens onze afwezigheid heel wat gebeurd in Kampala, 2 weken geleden zijn er onrusten uitgebroken waarbij 40 mensen zijn doodgeschoten. We merken dat mensen bang zijn. De onderliggende problemen zijn niet opgelost. Mensen grijpen de gelegenheid aan om hun ongenoegen over de toestand in Uganda kenbaar te maken. De honger, enorme werkloosheid en corruptie zijn hierin de belangrijkste factoren. De angst voor nieuwe onrusten is dan ook voelbaar. We hopen en bidden dat nieuwe geweldsuitbarstingen ons bespaard blijven.
Vanmiddag gaan we naar Bulamu. Leuk om de kids allemaal weer te zien. We kijken er naar uit!!

Zaterdagochtendvroeg waren Bart, Rob, Maaike en Klaske al vroeg in de weer. Twee kramen op de Janskerkhof werden volgebouwd en al gauw kwamen de eerste kopers. Het is de hele dag goed doorgelopen. De verwachting en hoop was dat wij euro 500 zouden ophalen en dit is ook precies deze dag verdiend. Een erg mooi resultaat voor een dagje werk. Aan een ieder die spullen voor de markt heeft aangeleverd. Bedankt!!!

Wij zijn als Thuisfrontcommissie nog druk bezig met het verzamelen van spullen voor de rommelmarkt op zaterdag 19 september.
Waarom?
De Thuisfrontcommissie is druk bezig met activiteiten om geld in te zamelen om het begrotingstekort aan te vullen voor Kaja Foundation om Chris & Jur en Chris Mugisa te ondersteunen in Uganda.
Wat?
We denken hierbij aan kwalitatief goede, bruikbare spullen, niet te groot en handzaam. Liever geen kleding, tenzij het nieuwe of mooie waren zijn. Goede apparatuur is ook welkom.
Kortom, we zijn op zoek naar spullen die we voor een aantrekkelijke prijs voor Kaja Foundation kunnen verkopen!

Ook in Nederland begint het nu in het nieuws door te komen. Onrust in Oeganda. In het NRC Handelsblad van 11 september 2009 staat een artikel over de onrusten. Klik hier voor het hele artikel.
De onrusten treffen ook Joseph en de kinderen. Hieronder volgt een gedeelte van een mail welke wij van Joseph hebben ontvangen. Hierin wordt de situatie in Oeganda verder uitgelegd.
”there is a lot of insecurity in the city and its environs. It comes as a result of the subjects of the Kabaka, taking on the central government, intending to show their disapproval of the plans by the government to block the Kabaka from going to Bugerere, an area about 40 kilometres North-East of Kampala city.
I think you know that Uganda is a republic, but with cultural leaders, some with titles such as “King”. These people are supposed to be ceremonial leaders with only spiritual jurisdiction over their subjects but no political power.
There are a number of such “kings” but the most powerful of them all is the king of Buganda, locally titled Kabaka. His forefathers are the ones who invited the English protestant missionaries who were shortly followed by the traders who also doubled as agents of the British government, and led to the signing of the agreements that brought about the state of Uganda being a protectorate and later a colony of Great Britain.
After Independence, The then executive prime minister, Milton Obote, clashed with the then Kabaka, which led to the army invading the Kabaka’s palace intending to arrest or kill him. That was in 1966. The kabaka fled into exile in England where he died 3 years later. Obote declared kingship illegal and banned all things pertaining to kingdoms.
When the present President took over power after a bloody civil war, he re-instated kingdoms and kingship and the present Kabaka, Ronald Mutebi II, was crowned in 1993. Since that time, the Kabaka has been docile until around 2000 when his ministers started agitating for a federal status. You see, in the past, the Kabaka used to claim ownership on everything in his kingdom including the lives of his subjects and of course all the land. In 1900, the British forced the Kabaka into an agreement, relinquishing control over much of the land in Buganda, giving the largest part to the Kingdom of england, which was subsequently called Crown Land. Another big part, the kabaka was forced to give to his loyal subjects through the regional chiefs. So each chief received 1 square mile of land, which in turn they would also give out to their loyal subjects. So this category was termed “Mailo” land after the square “mile”. So the rest of the land, more than10,000 square miles, remained the sole private property of the Kabaka.
Most of the Kabaka’s land is around the capital city, Kampala. and because it is the capital city, the government has control over it. The Kabaka realised that he would be richer if he were to collect revenue from all the developments on the land. So he started demanding for power to control the city. The central government overruled his requests and instead went ahead to try to make amendments to the land bill, where all undeveloped land would be taken over by government to be given out to entrepreneurs who exhibited comprehensive plans to develop it. The Buganda kingdom refused.
There are a number of ethnic groups in Uganda. Of recent, the central government operatives have been encouraging ethnic groups to break away from Buganda and set up their own “kings”. The present insecurity comes as a result of one of these new “kings” prohibiting the Kabaka from visiting the area under his jurisdiction. the kabaka says the said area belongs to him, but the new “king” of the area says no. The Kabaka is adamant and is going ahead with plans to visit the area on 12th September. The new “king’s” subjects are vowing to shed blood to prevent the Kabaka from touring their area. The Kabaka’s subjects, and there are millions of them, are vowing to decimate all members of the small ethnic group that is preventing their “Landlord” from visiting his area. The central governement went ahead to warn the Kabaka to call off the visit. Something similar happened last year when the Kabaka wanted to visit another area, north of kampala and the area “king” threatened to harm him.The government sent in armed security operatives who blocked the Kabaka from proceeding with his visit.
In the present case, the trouble started in this area on Monday when the Police violently chased away some young people who were erecting wooden exhibition stalls at the intended venue of the Kabaka’s visit. Ever since that day, there has been a lot of insecurity in the area, with many arrests and detentions, as well as beatings, some of them quite serious leading to 2 deaths. This morning, the Kabaka’s prime minister was prohibited from going to Bugerere as it had been planned that he precede the Kabaka to the area to see to the preparations. When reports of this incident reached the city, the citizens started rioting. They went on a rampage, looting shops, setting fire to cars and motorcycles, torching several buildings, blocking roads and generally causing a lot of mayhem. the riot police came in and blood started flowing. In the late afternoon, the army was called in to give re-inforcements to the police and up to late evening, there was still a lot of trouble that cars and most other forms of transport were still at a standstill. The rioters, mainly young male youths, are vowing not to stop untill after the Kabaka travels well to Bugerere, do what he will do and return safely to his palace outside Kampala.
For the moment, the situation is quite tense. Please pray for us.”
